The art direction and style for this game started out as something pretty generic but then grew over time. Brad was doing most of the 2D art work so as a produce I had to take a step back and realized "Hey. Brad is programming. He can't do all the art too. That's basically making the whole game." So we spread the art out using the talents of the whole team. Brad, Rajahni and Sean all started doing some cool 3D models but these models needed reference images and samples before they could begin.
I took to the internet and pulled as many samples as I could fit onto a PowerPoint slide without going microscopic. I created one style guide for weapons based on everything from handguns to sniper rifles to axes and clubs. I then pulled a bunch of animals in front and side views not only for the character models but for the weapons as well. Adding my own notes at the end completed each guide and we were ready to get the creative juices flowing. The models that the team came up with were better than I expected. Sean created a pillbug pistol that became the perfect starting weapon for the game. More weapons were added such as the viper rifle and the toma-hawk which all fit the feel and style of the game.
All in all I can say I'm pretty thrilled about how our prototype art turned out. We would probably have done a bit better with a professional artist but despite not having one, I am confident in saying we did quite well. I've loved working on Animal Warfare with this team and am happy with the prototype that's come out of it.
